How to Repurpose an Old Utility Chair

Special family times often take place in the kitchen. The old utility chairs that surrounded your kitchen table may bring back memories of lively family suppers, gingerbread house construction and algebra assistance from Mom or Dad. But even the most cherished chairs wear out. If your special old chair is just taking up space in your house, use it outside as a colorful accent or a trellis for growing vines. The flowers and the memories can make it a charming addition to your garden.

Remove the seat cushion with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Brush away any rust spots with a wire brush. Pour several quarts of warm water into a bucket and mix in a squirt of liquid dish soap. Clean the chair with the warm soapy water and a rag. Allow it to dry completely.

Cover the entire chair with a coat of rust-preventing spray primer. Allow it to dry for 30 minutes.

    • 4

Spray the entire chair with a thin coat of rust-preventing spray paint. Allow the paint to dry for five minutes and then spray on another coat. Wait five more minutes and add a third coat.

Place the chair in the garden as an accent. If desired, hang a plant from the back or train vines to grow over the chair.
