How to Estimate How Many Pavers I Need

Using pavers---small rock, concrete or brick slabs---to construct a patio, walkway or sidewalk is a great way to avoid dealing with messy cement or concrete. With pavers, you can design your patio to suit your needs without having to call a contractor or spend extra money. In order to properly plan your build, you'll need to figure out how many pavers the build will require.

Instructions

  1. Use an Online Calculator Tool

    • 1

Navigate to a website offering a free calculator on your web browser (see Resources). This website provides a calculator to help you determine the amount of pavers you'll need.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of the area you'd like to pave (the plot), and multiply the two numbers together using a calculator to find the area. For example, if the area to be paved is 10 feet long and 13 feet wide, the total area of the plot is 130 square feet. If the plot is irregularly shaped, mentally divide it into sections, find the area of each section, and add them all together to find the total area.

    • 3

Enter the number you calculated for the total area (in square feet) into the first empty box of the online calculator.

    • 4

Select the type of pavers you are planning on using for the project. The website offers a few different types and sizes, but if your size isn't listed, you may need to manually calculate the amount of pavers using the method below.

    • 5

Click the "Calculate" button, and the number of pavers you'll need will be displayed in the small box labeled, "Number of Pavers Needed."

Manually Calculate the Number of Pavers

    • 6

Measure the length and width of the area you'd like to pave (the plot), and multiply the two numbers together using a calculator to find the area. For example, if the area to be paved is ten feet long and 13 feet wide, the total area of the plot is 130 square feet. If the plot is irregularly shaped, mentally divide it into sections, find the area of each section, and add them all together to find the total area.

    • 7

Measure the dimensions of the pavers you would like to use (length and width), and convert the measurements to feet. Convert the numbers by dividing the inches by twelve (for example, 4in÷12= .33ft). Multiply the length and width of the paver (in feet) to get the area of the paver (for example, .33ft x .45ft = .1485 square feet).

    • 8

Divide the total area of the plot (in square feet) by the area of one paver (in square feet). For example, if the plot area is 30 square feet, and the area of one paver is .1485 square feet, you would need approximately 203 pavers (rounding up to the next whole paver just to be safe). In irregular plans, add a few extra pavers to be safe.
