How to Prevent Asphalt Paving From Bleeding

If you've ever driven along asphalt paved roadways or have noticed a glass-like substance on the surface of your asphalt paved driveway and wondered what that substance is called, it is called bleeding asphalt. This is due to high temperatures affecting the oil in the asphalt material. Bleeding asphalt is usually sticky and may reduce skid resistance. There are a few steps to take once the asphalt is down to prevent asphalt paving from bleeding.

Things You'll Need

  • Chip sealer material
  • Hot oil
  • Small chip rock
  • Asphalt distributor truck
  • Chip spreader
  • Tire roller
  • Broom or high-pressure water hose

Instructions

    • 1

Before you begin, clean as much debris and dirt from the work area as possible with a broom or high-pressure water hose. After the asphalt is dry, use the asphalt distributor truck to spray an even layer of hot chip sealer material made from a mixture of asphalt and hot oil onto the surface of the asphalt.

    • 2

Using the chip spreader, follow the asphalt distributor and spread small chip or aggregate rocks over the entire surface of the asphalt. This must be done very quickly after the heated asphalt layer is down so the rock can imbed into the liquid asphalt.

    • 3

Use the pneumatic or solid rubber tire roller to compact the aggregate rock. Repeat this process up to four times to ensure the rock is completely compacted into the asphalt.

    • 4

After the aggregate rock is compacted, use a broom to sweep away any leftover rocks.
