How to Use Boiled Linseed Oil As a Concrete Finish

Whether you just had a new concrete slab or driveway poured or made repairs on an older concrete structure, you should finish, or seal, the concrete to protect your investment. Boiled linseed oil, which is a drying oil, creates a watertight layer on concrete surfaces when mixed with mineral oil, like turpentine, before application. When applying boiled linseed oil finish to your concrete, go slow, as a too-thick application will cause haziness, blistering or bubbles.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix one part boiled linseed oil with one part turpentine in a regular garden pump sprayer. Each of these items are readily available at hardware stores.

    • 2

Spray the clean, dry concrete with a smooth pass. Two thinner layers will create better results than one thick layer.

    • 3

Overlap each pass with the previous one by about 2 inches to reduce lap lines, or streaky application. Do not allow the boiled linseed sealer to dry before making the next pass. Allow each full layer of finish to dry before applying another layer. Two layers that achieve consistent, even coverage is better than three or more, which contributes to imperfections in the seal's appearance.
