How to Level Ground for Pavers

Pavers are excellent to use for installing patios or paths that will improve the landscaping around your home. The key to a good job is to have a level base when you begin laying the pavers in place. Taking the extra time in the beginning stages of the project will ensure that the finished product is something safe and attractive that will last for a long time.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a shovel to excavate the area of your project. You will want the excavation to be deep enough to accommodate the pavers, 1 inch of sand, and 3 to 4 inches of aggregate. A little deeper is better as you can add more aggregate to make up the difference.

    • 2

Place wooden stakes around the excavation and use a line level to place string between the stakes. The more string lines you have the easier it will be to measure for a level base, but don't put so many that it hinders your ability to work.

    • 3

Pour sand into the excavation and spread it out to a depth of about 1 inch. Use the plate compactor to compact the sand. Measure with a tape measure down to the sand from the string to get it even. It doesn't have to be exact but should be close.

    • 4

Pour the gravel or other aggregate into the excavation. Spread it and use the same method to measure for depth. You will want the top of the aggregate to be at a depth from the top of the excavation that is equal to the thickness of the pavers.

    • 5

Use the plate compactor to tamp the aggregate, measuring regularly to ensure even distribution. Remove the stakes and strings and set your pavers.
