How to Pave with Irregular Flagstone

Natural stones, such as sandstone, bluestone, slate and limestone, are all considered flagstone. This stone, with its warm colors and interesting texture, fits well in many landscape styles when left in it's natural, irregular shape. Its durability and slip-resistant surface make it suitable for paving projects such as walkways and patios, and the random sizes and shapes provide flexibility for navigating both angles and curves. Installation is more time consuming than it is for many uniform-shaped pavers, and the slabs can be heavy and cumbersome. Nevertheless, many homeowners can successfully accomplish their own paving job with a bit of muscle, a few tools and several helpers.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Outline the patio or walkway area, using the garden hose as a guide.

    • 2

Excavate and smooth the area to a depth of 6 inches with the standard shovel. Compact the soil firmly with the plate compactor.

    • 3

Distribute a 4-inch bed of gravel over the excavated area, and smooth it out as much as possible with the rake and square-nosed shovel. Compact the gravel firmly, using the plate compactor.

    • 4

Distribute a 2-inch bed of sand over the gravel, using the square-nosed shovel. Smooth it with the rake and compact the surface with the compactor.

    Installation

    • 5

Arrange the pavers on the bed of sand, fitting them together like a puzzle. Space the joints as evenly as possible for a more organized appearance.

Cut the pavers when necessary to adjust for a better fit, using the brick set and hammer.

    • 6

Tap the stones firmly in place with the mallet.

    • 7

Level all pieces with each other, using the standard level. Add or remove sand beneath them to make adjustments for high or low spots.

    • 8

Fill the joints with the small gravel to hold the pavers more firmly in place.
