How to Clean a Concrete Driveway of Tar

Tar is used on roadways and roofs. The dark, sticky substance is difficult to remove and will create unsightly spots on your concrete driveway. Tar is easier to remove before it has a chance to harden onto the driveway. When cleaning up tar, don't step in it or you could track it onto other areas of the driveway or into your house.

  • Paint scrapper
  • Small plastic container

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape as much of the tar as possible off the cement driveway with a paint scraper. Continue scraping until you can no longer remove any more tar.

    • 2

Fill a small plastic container with mineral spirits. Dip a nylon scrub brush into the mineral spirits and scrub the tar vigorously back and forth.

    • 3

Continue scrubbing until you have removed the tar from the cement driveway. Rinse the driveway clean with a water hose. Continue with the remaining steps if the tar is still present on the concrete.

    • 4

Wear a pair of thick rubber gloves and hold a piece of dry ice on top of the tar. Hold the ice on the tar for several seconds.

    • 5

Hit the tar with a small hammer. The dry ice will make the tar brittle. Sweep the tar pieces off the concrete driveway and into a dustpan. Rinse the driveway clean with a water hose.
