How to Safely Remove Ice From Driveways

Ice that is layered on a driveway is not just a driving hazard. Individuals walking along the driveway may also slip due to the layers of ice. Chemical de-icing agents that are sold in stores may fully remove layers of ice, but these products could harm the environment or cause costly damage to your driveway. Several different ingredients can be utilized to create a liquid solution that will remove such layers of ice without damaging the driveway or the environment.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Flip the broom over so the handle is making contact with the driveway.

    • 2

Break up any visible portions of ice with the broom's handle. Then, sweep the ice off of the driveway or manually remove the ice with your hands.

    • 3

Heat about 6 cups of tap water in your microwave oven for two to three minutes.

    • 4

Mix roughly 3 cups of table salt, calcium chloride pellets or water conditioner salt with the heated water. Use a spoon to stir the mixture.

    • 5

Pour the mixture slowly over the ice-covered portions of the driveway. The solution removes the remaining ice and prevents the ice from returning.
