How to Lay Landscape Bricks

Bricks serve a variety of purposes in landscape design. Used as edging for gardens, retaining walls or walkways, bricks are durable and easy to work with. They provide clean, uniform lines and help keep grass and weeds out of gardens. With a shovel, patience and attention to detail, laying landscape bricks is a project you can do yourself over a few days.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where you want to lay the bricks, and measure the perimeter. If you're edging a round plant bed, wrap a hose or string around the garden and measure it. Outline the perimeter with flour.

    • 2

Insert wooden stakes along the perimeter. Tie a string from stake to stake, following the outline of the border. The stakes and the string provide a framework to ensure that the bricks are aligned.

    • 3

Clear the ground where you want to lay the bricks. Use a hoe or shovel to remove grass, debris and small rocks. Dig a trench 4 inches deep and 2 inches wider than the bricks. Save as much of the soil as possible and keep it in a bucket.

    • 4

Spread a 1-inch layer of sand over the trench. Firm the sand with the back of a shovel.

    • 5

Place one landscaping brick in the trench. Step back to see if you're happy with the height of the brick. It should sit partially underground for stability. Add more sand or remove dirt as necessary to make any adjustments.

    • 6

Work your way around the trench, laying the bricks 1/4 inch apart.

    • 7

Press sand or the soil around each brick. Pour water on the bricks to harden the sand or soil between the bricks.
