How to Change the Color of Cultured Stone After Installation

Cultured stone consists of concrete that installers mold to give the appearance of natural stone. Cultured stone may also contain polymer binders and colorants in the mixture. Techniques to change the color of cultured stone resemble those to change the color of any concrete. Specifically, post-installation cultured stone coloring requires an acid stain that etches into the very structure of the compound and oxides in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the cultured stone to be stained with a concrete cleaner. Scrub the cleaner into the concrete surface with a push broom for horizontally installed stone, or a hand-broom for vertically installed stone. Rinse the cultured stone clean.

    • 2

Fill a backpack sprayer with concrete stain and slowly and evenly coat the cultured stone surface. Brush the stain onto hard-to-reach crevices. Coat the stone surface evenly for one solid color.

    • 3

Allow the stain to sit for three hours and rinse with water. Rinse out the backpack sprayer and refill with concrete sealer.

    • 4

Apply the concrete sealer evenly to the cultured stone surface. Brush the sealer onto hard-to reach crevices. Allow the sealer to dry and apply a second coat. Allow the second coat to dry prior to use to the cultured stone area.
