How to Grout Flagstone

Flagstone walkways add charm to any yard. Installed flagstones without any grout may appear unfinished. People walking on the flagstone pathway or surface can move dirt onto the flagstones from the spaces in between, increasing cleaning time. Grouting your flagstone smooths its appearance and keeps the stones from shifting. Grouting flagstone takes time but you can accomplish the task easily with some patience. When finished, the appearance and durability of the flagstone surface will reward you for your effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix one part cement and one part sand in a bucket so that the sand and cement fills one third of the bucket space. Add water one quart at a time until a soupy mixture develops.

    • 2

Fill a thick plastic bag with the mixture and tie the open end. Cut a hole at one bottom corner of the bag to the desired grout space size.

    • 3

Squeeze the grout mixture gently out of the bag and into the spaces in between flagstones, starting from one corner outward. Overfill the spaces about 1/4 inch.

    • 4

Scrape the excess grout off the joints with a trowel after the grout sets but is still malleable. Allow the grout to dry for 24 hours prior to using the surface.
