How to Lay Slate Slabs

Slate is a metamorphic stone that is formed from clay, quartz and sedimentary rock shale. The colors of slate range from shades of green, black and gray. Although the rock is thin and can break fairly easily, it can be used in a multitude of ways, such as in roofing, countertops, grave stones and pavers. You can lay slate slabs in your patio or at the backyard door. When properly installation, your slate slabs will look great and endure the test of time.

Things You'll Need

• Shovel
• Grit and sand
• Cement
• Slate slabs
• Spirit level

     Prepare the ground by digging down 8 inches in the area in which you want to place the slabs. Try to make that depression as even as possible.

   • 2

     Mix together a 10 to 1 ratio of grit/sand and cement and pour it into the depression at a thickness of 2.5 inches.

   • 3

     Lay the slate slabs in the mix that you poured into the dpression. Check that they are level by using a spirit level. Adjust the slabs as needed.
