Do-it-Yourself Gravel & Concrete Driveway

Having a paved driveway is always better than gravel or dirt driveways. Paved driveways are better for the cars that use them because they are less likely to damage body paint with loose flying rocks or make a mess with dust or mud. Do-it-yourself gravel and concrete driveways are easy to pave and will keep your cars in good shape over time.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the driveway to be paved. For best results, your driveway must be free of any loose debris and leveled to a flat surface.

    • 2

Spread a layer of gravel onto the driveway. Contact your local gravel service to dump the gravel onto the driveway. Spread the gravel evenly over the surface. Use markers to indicate the boundaries of your driveway.

    • 3

Obtain or create a concrete mixture. If you have the equipment to make your own mixture, purchase Portland cement and sand from your local home and garden store. Your cement and sand should be at a 1:2 ratio depending on the size of your driveway. If you want, you can add gravel to the mixture to take up more space for a cheaper mix. Add water to the mixture slowly, continuously stirring it until the concrete becomes a thick paste. If you don't have to equipment to make your own concrete, contact your local concrete service to do it for you.

    • 4

Spread the concrete over the gravel.

    • 5

Allow the concrete to dry. Do not drive or walk over the driveway for at least 24 hours as the concrete hardens.
