How to Repair a Cracked and Uneven Cement Pad

Old concrete will crack and sag due to age and subsurface drainage. Cement manufacturers produce concrete patching compounds and leveling mixes which are used to repair old concrete but leaves the patched areas visible. One option is to resurface the concrete which adds a layer of resurfacing material to any desired thickness. Basic repair and refacing of the concrete only requires approximately 1/2 inch of material. The process is similar to pouring concrete but takes a substantially less amount of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Hammer out any large cracks to expose a V-shaped channel using a hammer and rock chisel. Remove any large chunks of cement.

    • 2

Clean the area with a broom and mop to remove any dirt or debris. Leave the surface of the concrete damp but without standing water.

    • 3

Spread concrete paste over the surface of the concrete with a paint brush or broom.

    • 4

Mix the concrete resurfacing material to a consistency slightly thinner than peanut butter.

    • 5

Spread the material over the surface of the existing concrete pad to a thickness of 1/2 to 1 inch. Level the surface of the concrete out with a float. Smooth the top of the concrete after the surface water has evaporated and left the concrete with a dull gray appearance. Create a smooth finish with a trowel or drag a broom across the surface for a skid-resistant finish.
