How to Estimate the Amount of Sand for Pavers

You use sand in two stages of paver installation: as a leveling medium and to fill joints after the installation. Concrete sand forms minor bonds with the material, making it an ideal material for leveling and filling the joints. Part of preparing to lay out a paver structure includes obtaining the proper amounts of material. Estimating the amount of sand necessary is a simple matter of measuring the area and calculating the volume. Sand is sold by cubic feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the area for the pavers. Separate the area into square and triangular sections if the structure does not follow a standard square or rectangular shape.

    • 2

Multiply the length by the width for each section. With triangular sections, divide the result by 2.

    • 3

Add the result for each section together to determine an overall area. Multiply the total by 2 to accommodate for a 2-inch layer of sand beneath the pavers.

    • 4

Multiply the total by 1.2 to add 10 percent for extra material for the base layer and 10 percent for sand that is brushed into the surface gaps after you have laid the pavers.
