How to Color Paver Blocks

Pavers are a durable hardscape material used to lay walkways and patios on commercial and residential landscapes. Carved or poured from stone, brick or concrete, pavers come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. If you like the style of pavers, but want to spruce up their appearance, you can color them with a paint designed for this purpose. The slip-guard contained in many paints makes them less slippery and easier to clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a stiff broom, followed by a wet/ dry vacuum to remove dirt and grit from the pavers. Rinse with a hose to remove any stray debris.

    • 2

Apply concrete primer with a paint roller or brush, and wait for the primer to dry.

    • 3

Mix the paving paint with a flat wooden stirrer. Add 20 percent mineral turpentine to dilute the first coat of paint. The mineral turpentine will help the paint stick to the paver surface.

    • 4

Use a short-nap roller to apply the first coat of paving paint. Apply a second coat of paving paint without diluting it. After six hours, apply a third coat if necessary. Using a roller brush allows you to apply paint neatly and quickly for an even finish.

    • 5

Wipe the rim of your paint can with a rag or sponge. Hammer the lid tightly closed with a hammer to ensure the leftover paint is sealed. Wash brushes and rollers with turpentine, then rinse them with water right away.

    • 6

Add a layer of concrete sealant once the last coat of paint dries. Sealant protects the pavers from water damage and preserves the paint longer.
