History of the John Deere Crawler

In 1837, John Deere, a young blacksmith from Vermont, moved to Illinois in search of work. After hearing farmers' complaints of inferior plows, Deere developed a steel plow. Demand for Deere's quality products grew, and he was soon producing other farm implements for his business, Deere & Company.
  1. Invention

    • Deere & Company first developed the John Deere Track Type Model MC Crawler Dozer as a type of tractor able to trek up and down slippery hills and light soils. The wheels of the conventional tractor were replaced with ridged belts of thick rubber that could grasp slippery soil.

    Specifics

    • In the 1940s and 50s, Deere & Company began producing crawler tractor machines, intended for agricultural use. The original MC Crawler Dozer boasted four speeds and reverse, the same engine as "M" and "MT" tractors, hydraulic control, a belt pulley and a hydraulic tool carrier. Farmers could purchase a variety of optional equipment for their specific farming task.

    Development

    • Deere & Company acquired industrial production equipment from another company in 1946 and began developing crawlers for the rapidly expanding post-war United States. In 1958, Deere & Company completed the first crawler designed for industrial construction use.
