Paver Stone Ideas

Use paving stones as a decorative option to the traditional front walkway or driveway. Paving stones come in a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes. In addition to a walkway or driveway, they can create a decorative and functional patio or retaining wall. Your only limits are the amount of space you have to work with, the budget for the project and the creativity of the person installing the paving stones.
  1. Preparation

    • Before you put down any paving stones, sketch the design you want to create. This will help you determine the number and style of pavers you'll need. Grade the area and lay a base of crushed gravel 3 to 7 inches deep. Pack the area down with a machine compacter and, if possible, allow the crushed gravel to settle.

    Mosaics

    • Create a round mosaic pattern for small patios or use a mosaic as a focal point within a larger stone patio or driveway. Create the mosaic from the inside out. You can vary the color of the pavers you are using in the mosaic to add a unique sense of color and design.

    Waterfall

    • Use pavers to create a vertical waterfall feature. A waterfall can be incorporated into the patio portion surrounding an in-ground pool, or it can a stand-alone feature. You can use the same type and color of pavers to create a uniform look to your waterfall or use different shapes, sizes and colors for a more natural-looking waterfall.

    Other Sytles

    • Other design styles you can use are what's called the running bond pattern, which is less expensive, doesn't require as many cuts to individual pavers and is the easiest to install. When installed, the running bond pattern looks the same way as the bricks on the side of a house. The first row is laid, with a second row starting half way along the first paver. The herringbone pattern sets rectangular pavers at 45-degree angles to one another.
