How to Finish Flagstone & Concrete

The rustic quality of flagstones and the durability of concrete combine to create attractive and functional patio and walkway spaces. Help preserve the function and appearance of these paved areas by finishing all exposed surfaces with color-enhancing, dirt and moisture-shielding sealant. Seal all concrete, flagstone and mortar joints at the same time by using sealant designed for both stone and concrete surfaces. Also use sealant as final step after staining or after patching, restoring and staining older concrete and stone surfaces.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Allow new installations of concrete and mortared flagstone to cure for at least two weeks before finishing.

    • 2

Scrub older surfaces or concrete surfaces that are especially smooth with an eco-friendly, all-in-one concrete cleaner and etching solution. The etching solution will open the pores of the concrete, allowing it to better accept the sealant. Rinse with fresh water and allow all surfaces to dry fully.

    • 3

Pour a dribble of silane/siloxane penetrating concrete and stone sealant in one corner. Smooth the dribble over the surface using a paint roller with a long handle. Continue to pour and spread the sealant until the entire surface is covered.

    • 4

Paint any hard-to-reach areas with sealant, using a paintbrush.

    • 5

Apply a second coat of sealant after the first. The second coat may be applied directly after the first.

    • 6

Allow the finished flagstones and concrete to dry for at least 48 hours before allowing heavy foot or vehicular traffic.
