How to Measure Concrete Formula

When planning to lay a concrete patio, driveway or other project, you need to know the required amount of concrete. Most concrete projects will have the required amount in terms of cubic yards. You can determine the number of cubic yards for your project using a simple formula. This formula allows you to price the project and determine if you need more or less concrete based on the calculations. You may need a friend to help you take measurements for large concrete projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the concrete project area. You should sketch odd-shaped projects into measurable squares or rectangles to measure these areas.

    • 2

Determine the depth of the concrete patio or driveway. A common depth is 4 inches, although your project may be different.

    • 3

Multiply length times width times depth to create a conversion figure.

    • 4

Divide the figure from step 3 by 27 to convert the figure to square yards. This is the total amount of concrete needed for the project.
