How to Make Patio Concrete Pavers

Patios made with concrete pavers offer stability and the options of plain or elaborate designs. While laying the pavers is challenging, work making your own concrete pavers is relatively simple and allows you to create your own colors for the project. Making the pavers is a project in which you can include older children, who will enjoy its creative simplicity.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the paver molds by spraying the interiors with non-stick cooking spray. Set them aside.

    • 2

Mix together 2 1/2 qts. of Portland cement and 5 qts. of sand in a wheelbarrow.

    • 3

Add 1 1/2 qts.of water to the dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly with a garden hoe or cement trowel. Add water, 1/4 qt. at a time, until the cement reaches a consistency similar to brownie or thick cake batter.

    • 4

Pour the mixture into the prepared mold until the mold is half-full.

    • 5

Tap and shake the sides and bottom of the mold to remove any air bubbles. Pour more mixture into the mold until it is full, again shaking and tapping to remove air.

    • 6

Place the filled mold in a well-ventilated, dry area to set-up and cure for 24 hours.

    • 7

Unmold the paver by tipping the mold over a soft surface. Allow the pavers to continue to cure in a dry area for another two to three days before installing them in the patio area.
