Paver Step Ideas

Limestone

• Limestone is a durable, natural sedimentary rock made up of calcium carbonate, or mineral calcite. Within the hard sediment layer of limestone are traces of fossils from fish and animals from the ocean. Limestone is a long-lasting material that can be cut to size for paver steps, and the stone can be cleaned with an acid solution and sealed for added protection.

Sandstone

• Sandstone becomes a solid mass by the buildup of eroded quartz and feldspar particles. Three types of sandstone, which is a sedimentary rock, are arkosic, quartzrose and argillaceous. Sandstone has a nice, consistent texture and comes in many pastel and natural colors.

Slate

• Slate is formed from layers of clay and volcanic ash, and it is considered a metasedimentary rock. Slate stones come in a wide variety of colors, sizes and thicknesses. Slate is one of the more expensive stones for pavers, because it is heavy and expensive to move around.

Concrete

• Concrete is the lowest cost and most versatile paver step option. Concrete pavers are strong, durable, easy to install and offer many design options, including unlimited colors for dyeing. Maintain the paver steps with simple sweeping and rinsing with a hose.
