Determine whether the use of the concrete is a common shape or project element, as precast concrete may be the best solution for some parts of the project, especially if many of the same elements are needed. Precast concrete is cast at a factory, as opposed to on-site, and is ready to use.
Evaluate the need for vertical placement of concrete components. If elements of the project will be placed vertically, tilt-up construction may be the best method. Tilt-up concrete is designed to take a solid shape early in the curing process so it can be lifted into place.
Use flowable fill concrete for horizontal areas that can be filled with a more liquid mixture and will have plenty of time to cure and harden. Flowable fill concrete should be used in areas such as these, including driveways, sidewalks and foundations.
Evaluate the need for water to flow through the concrete once it has set and hardened. Pervious concrete allows for water runoff to flow down through due to its somewhat porous nature, allowing water to drain from the area much faster.
