Screed Problems

The term "screed" used in masonry may be a noun or a verb. Screed is a flat tool used to level and smooth freshly poured concrete. Screed is the excess moisture on the surface of poured concrete. Screeding is the process of smoothing wet concrete.
  1. Mechanical

    • Mechanical screeds such a vibrating truss screed can have problems with welded joints coming apart, mechanical connection failure and uneven vibration. Vibrating screeds come in sections that can be connected to produce a 75-foot long screeding machine.

    Surface

    • Screeding machines can make transverse indentations in the surface of the concrete. This can occur from the weight of the machine if it is stopped before the end of the operation. Screeding performed too quickly can cause a washboard effect of the surface of the concrete.

    Mixture

    • Improperly mixed concrete will create major screed problems, such as curling of edges and joints. The moisture in the screed will evaporate at differing rates, creating low areas. A mixture which is too dry will cause the screed to crack and/or crumble under the weight of furniture and heavy traffic.
