Concrete Walkway Preparation

Many homes have a concrete walkway somewhere on their property, often leading from the front door to the driveway. This provides a path for you and others without having to walk across muddy, wet or snow-covered grass. Concrete is a popular choice due to its durability, availability and ease-of-use. Before constructing your concrete walkway, you must take steps to clear the ground and build the form.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the ground where the walkway is being installed with spray paint.

    • 2

Excavate the area inside the paint, digging beneath the frost line. (Your local zoning board can tell you how deep this is.)

    • 3

Smooth the soil inside the hole with a rake and tamp it down.

    • 4

Place expansion strips against any edge the walkway comes into contact with, such as a patio or the edge of the driveway. This allows for the concrete to expand and contract.

    • 5

Drive wooden stakes into the ground along the edge of the trench.

    • 6

Nail 2-by-4 boards to the wooden stakes along the trench (these are the sides of the form).
