Materials Used for Driveways

Gravel

• Using loose stone or gravel for a driveway is usually one of the least expensive options.Gravel is long-lasting and requires little maintenance, but some erosion may occur over time and the owner might have to replace some of the stone. Gravel comes in a wide range of colors to match the color of the home. When bordered with larger stones, the loose stone typically stays in place. Stone driveways are not well-suited for areas with snow, as snow removal is difficult.

Asphalt

• Asphalt is a fairly inexpensive option to install but it is one of the higher maintenance options as well. Asphalt is a dark material that hides oil and other car stains well. It should be sealed each year and cracks often occur, requiring patching. The asphalt may need to be replaced more frequently than other materials, as well. Edging is not required, but it is often used to make the driveway more appealing.

Tar and Chip

• A mixture of asphalt and gravel, a tar and chip driveway offers a good alternative to either option. The driveway will have the look of a stone driveway, but with the stability of an asphalt drive. To create this type of driveway, builders first lay the asphalt. While the asphalt is still hot, stone is poured over the top. Different colors of stone can be used to create a look that matches the colors of the home.

Concrete

• Concrete has long been used for driveways and roads because of its durability and long life. There is maintenance that is required, however. Concrete can crack, requiring patches or tar to repair. It will typically only crack in harsher weather conditions. A concrete driveway is one of the more expensive options and it can be difficult to exactly match the existing concrete when patching is required. Concrete can also be colored or stamped for a more decorative appearance.

Pavers

• Many different types of pavers can be used to create a decorative driveway for a home. Pavers are made from various materials including concrete, brick and stone. They also can be purchased in different shapes and colors, leaving numerous design options to match the decor of the home. The cost of the various types of pavers varies greatly, ranging from cheaper brick pavers to more expensive natural stone.
