Measure out the desired size of your patio with a measuring tape. Use wooden stakes to mark each corner. Stand within, and walk around your measured space to ensure you can easily and comfortably use the area.
Dig out the area within the measurements, using a shovel. Remove enough dirt and debris to accommodate 1 to 2 inches of sand base and 3 to 4 inches of crushed stone.
Tamp the area to a level base, using an electric compactor tool.
Place edging material of your choice to mark the edges of the patio. This material will act as retention for the patio as well. The top of the edging material should be placed so that it matches the top measurement of your cobblestones for aesthetics and safety.
Fill the excavated area with 3 to 4 inches of crushed stone, using the shovel. Use an electric compactor tool to tamp the area to a level base.
Fill the area now filled with tamped crush stone with 1 to 2 inches of sand. Use a long two-by-four piece of wood or other long, solid tool to sweep across the top of the sand to level the sand base.
Fill the area with the cobblestones, beginning in the center and using a level to ensure that the stones are laying level during installation. Continue to fill the area until you are unable to place full stones.
Cut the remaining cobblestones so that they will fit into the remaining areas of the patio, using a chisel or wet saw. The closer that you place the cobblestones, the more compact and stable the patio will be.
Pour additional sand over the tops of the cobblestones. Use a push broom to distribute the sand over the cobblestones and into their joints. Use an electric compactor tool to tamp the stones level and to settle the sand into the joints.
Sweep away excess sand with a push broom.
