How to Prep for Pavers

Adding a paved patio or walkway will enhance your yard's functionality and appearance while boosting your home's value. Pavers are an excellent choice for an outdoor activity area, as they will not crack over time. The interlocking joints allow for slight movements to happen without destroying the surface. They are simple to repair in the event that one paver does suffer some damage or discoloration. Best of all, this is a project that any home capenter can handle.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a sketch of the area where you want the new patio or walkway to be in relation to the house and other objects in the yard. Lay out a rough design using a garden hose and 2 by 4s. Play with several configurations before you decide on one final version.

    • 2

Spray paint an outline of the area to be paved, adding about six inches to the perimeter to allow for a good work space and for edging materials.

    • 3

Clear away any debris, grass or weeds that are on the surface of the work area.

    • 4

Excavate well below the surface, using a shovel and a pick. The depth should be equal to 4 inches of crushed stone, 2 inches of sand and the height of the pavers. Determine if you want the pavers to be at grade level or if you want them several inches higher than grade and excavate accordingly.

    • 5

Level off the area and compact the soil, adding a slope away from the house. The slope should be equal to 1 inch for every 5 to 8 feet.

    • 6

Treat the area with weed killer spray or use a weed inhibiting fabric liner.

    • 7

Add a layer of crushed rock 4 inches in depth, then compact it down to 3 inches in depth. If the stone is dry, moisten it prior to compacting.

    • 8

Add edging materials to hold the pavers in place.

    • 9

Add a 2-inch layer of sand and level it off. Compact the sand so it doesn't show a handprint when you press on it.

    • 10

Lay the pavers, then add sand to any exposed openings.
