How to Lay Circular Brick Pavers

Brick pavers form strong, appealing surfaces for a landscape. Though typical brick patterns such as basket weave are rectangular and require precise measurement, laying pavers in a circular pattern is not as complicated. There are a variety of circular patterns to choose from, including full circles and overlapping arches. Practice setting the pavers in a circle pattern before you set them in the foundation. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes when cutting paver bricks.

Instructions

    • 1

Excavate the site with shovels where you intend to lay the brick pavers. Dig an expanse at least 6 inches deep plus half the measured thickness of your paver bricks. Pack down the soil at the base with a tamper to stabilize the ground.

    • 2

Fit 2-by-4 inch edge restraints around the inside walls of the expanse. Fasten them down with 12-inch nail spikes.

    • 3

Lay 4 inches of ¾-inch aggregate and tamp it several times so the rock surface feels solid beneath the pressure.

    • 4

Draw lines from each corner of one end of a paver to the center of the opposite end to form a triangle on eight pavers. Use a masonry wet saw or a cold chisel with a hammer to cut each paver into a triangle to from the interior circle. Cut an additional paver in half.

    • 5

Snap a chalk line across the midpoint of each side of the expanse to find the center. Place the half paver over the center of the aggregate, where the two chalk lines intersect. Place the eight triangular pavers around the half of the brick to form a circle.

    • 6

Remove the pavers, mark the center point with a stick and pour a 1 ½ inch layer of coarse bedding sand over the aggregate. Rake it even and level without knocking the center stick over.

    • 7

Set the center half brick in the center point over the sand. Place the eight pavers around the center as practiced. Lay a wide board across the pavers and apply even force with your hands or a mallet to embed the bricks in the sand bedding.

    • 8

Lay an additional ring of full, uncut pavers around the first circle of triangular pavers. The innermost corners of the pavers in this new ring will touch the corners of the pavers in the original ring, but the spaces between the outward corners will be wider.

    • 9

Continue setting the pavers one full circle at a time from the center out.

    • 10

Add stone or cement dust to the surface and sweep it in the crevices. Use light moisture to tamp the dust down and continue adding more until the gaps are filled to the surface.
