Installation Instructions for Pavers

Paver walkways, patios or driveways can enhance the value and appeal of your yard with attractive, long-lasting surfaces. Installing pavers is a fitting do-it-yourself project since you don't need extensive skills or special equipment. Preparing the foundation is a key part of the process, which ensures the integrity of the surface. Excavating the site and stabilizing the gravel is laborious, but the results will last years.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the site for your paver walkway or patio by outlining the sides with wood pegs and twine. Add 3 inches to the sides for edge restraints.

    • 2

Dig the grass and soil from the site with a shovel, removing 6 inches for the base plus half the width of the pavers. For instance, if your pavers are 3 inches thick you'll need to dig about 7 1/2 inches deep. Pack down the soil with a hand tamper to make the ground stable for the base.

    • 3

Add 5 inches of 3/4 inch aggregate fill into the site and spread it out so that it evenly covers the soil. Tamp the aggregate until it remains firm against pressure. Shift rocks until the surface is level and tamp it again so the pavers will sit even.

    • 4

Place your edge restraints against the inner borders of the site and attach them to the ground with 9-inch nail spikes.

    • 5

Spread a 1-inch-thick coat of sand bedding evenly over the aggregate with a wood board.

    • 6

Lay the pavers in the sand bedding following your pattern. Set them flush against each other and adjust each paver in the sand until it doesn't wobble. Run a string across the base of each row and column as you work to check that the joints are aligned.

    • 7

Sweep fine sand over the completed paver surface, packing it in the narrow spaces between the pavers. Moisten the surfaces to weigh the dust down and add more until the spaces are filled.
