DIY Sandstone Pavers

Sandstone pavers form a light, attractive surface that stays cool under a hot sun. This sedimentary rock comes in hues of white, gray, beige, brown and pink. Laying a sandstone patio or walkway is a fitting do-it-yourself project as the soft pavers are relatively easy to hand-cut to fit. Customize a sandstone surface to fill an irregularly-shaped area or create an intricate pattern.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the site for your sandstone patio or walkway. Use a shovel to remove 4 inches of soil and continue digging the high areas until the bottom is level.

    • 2

Flatten the entire soil surface with a tamper tool to stabilize the ground and prevent the sandstones from sinking.

    • 3

Pour 3 inches of cement powder over the soil. Rake it to smooth and spread it even.

    • 4

Lay the sandstone pavers in the cement powder following your pattern. Leave no more than 1/8-inch gaps between stones and adjust each in the sand until it doesn't wobble. Hammer the stones gently to embed them in the cement and level them with adjacent pavers.

    • 5

Make a cutline over end pieces that need to be cut to fit. Use a diamond-tipped blade and power saw or a cold chisel and hammer. If hand-cutting, score the cutline on both sides of the stone until the line is deep enough that you can snap the stone with applied force.

    • 6

Sweep fine sand over the sandstone surface with a shop broom. Push the sand around the surface so it fills the gaps between stones, padding them as they settle.

    • 7

Seal the pavers with stone sealant to protect them from erosion and prevent fading.
