How to Repair Alligator Cracks in a Parking Lot

To repair parking lot alligator cracks use a hot crack filler first, and then a sealant to protect the filler. "Alligator" cracking refers to cracks that form a block pattern, similar to the geometric patterns on alligator hide. Buy the appropriate crack filler and sealant for the material you are repairing and make sure the weather will be clear and sunny with no rain in the forecast for the next 36-48 hours or the number of hours indicated by the crack repair products.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area of any lose material, debris, dirt and plant life to prevent contaminating the filler and sealant and so your repair lasts as long as possible. An air compressor or leaf blower will help, but if you use a water compressor the area must be dry before continuing.

    • 2

Apply the crack filler as directed, and wear gloves to protect your hands. Once the cracks are filled, do not walk or drive on them until the filler has set. Once the filler dries it may shrink below the surface, so reapply it until it is flush with the surrounding pavement.

Apply the sealant according to the product directions once the filler has set. The sealant will provide an extra layer of protection and prevent water from seeping in between the crack filler and the original crack.
