Measure out the area to be excavated with the tape measure. Stake and string the outline of the walkway.
Excavate six inches below grade, or ground level, within the area defined by the stakes and string. Excavate an additional two inches horizontally to fit the stakes and form boards.
Clear and remove any roots or stones which will interfere with the graded path. Lay out the form boards to define all edges of the walkway. Align them to the strings.
Unroll the geotechnical fabric within the edges of the path. Overlap the fabric by six inches and cut it to fit the path.
Fill the walkway to a depth of three and a half inches with gravel. Use the compactor to tamp down the gravel evenly. Compacting the gravel will stabilize it and create a level surface.
Add two inches of sand and roughly level the sand with a notched 2-by-4 dragged against the rails. Add sand at low spots to even out the grade before compacting. Tamp down the sand with a compactor to stabilize and level the sand.
Lay the pavers beginning with the edge at the rail. Place each paver directly on the sand and pound with the rubber mallet until the paver sits flush to the rail. Install all edge bricks prior to installing field pavers.
Install the field pavers identically without disturbing the levelled sand. Install the field pavers tight to each other and to the edge pavers. Install all pavers to level or sloped to prevent pooling or water damage.
Brush sand with the push broom between the pavers from the top of the completed walkway in thin layers. Fill in all seams with sand gradually over two passes.
Repeat the brushing and sand layering after one week. Remove the guide rails and replace with lawn edging of your choice.
