How to Drill a 3/8 Hole Through Stone

Depending on the paving or stonework project, you may have to drill a hole through one of the stones. You may have to drill to create a drainage area so water does not puddle on the surface of the stone, or to anchor the stone to keep it from moving or shifting over time. Drilling a hole in stone is a process that the homeowner can complete, with the use of a couple of tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the stone to determine where the hole should be drilled.

    • 2

Place the masonry drill bit into the impact drill and tighten it. It needs to be firmly secured in the drill. Impact drills vibrate because they also use a pounding motion to penetrate the stone.

    • 3

Pour a small amount of water on the area you are going to drill. Place the drill on the location where the hole will be made and squeeze the trigger on the drill. Make sure you are holding the drill tightly since it will vibrate.

Drill into the stone. As you are drilling stop periodically and pour more water on the stone. This will clean the hole as well as reduce the amount of dust.
