The Benefits of Concrete Pavers

When it comes to paved surfaces, a variety of materials can create an attractive look for your yard. Natural stone and brick are often used, but there are drawbacks to these materials. Concrete pavers, which are individual paving stones made from concrete, are an ideal alternative and have many advantages over other paving options.
  1. Design Options

    • Concrete pavers are extremely versatile and offer a variety of design options. They come in many different colors and shapes so you can create unique patterns to dress up your landscape. Some pavers mimic the look of stone or brick and allow and aren't nearly as expensive. They are available in several different textured finishes as well. Use pavers that are all the same shape, color and texture for a uniform look or mix and match. In fact, because of their versatility, concrete pavers may be used in patios, driveways, walkways, pool decks, sidewalks and garden areas.

    Strength

    • Because they are densely packed as they are made, concrete pavers are an extremely strong paving material. They can bear heavy loads and withstand extreme cold and heat. In fact, concrete pavers are actually stronger that a poured concrete slab, making them an ideal option for use in a driveway where they must bear the weight of a heavy car. Installed pavers each feature a joint that allows them to move without breaking or cracking like brick or stone.

    Low Maintenance

    • Unlike other paving materials, a surface built with concrete pavers is extremely easy to maintain. The surface should be swept regularly and hosed down every so often to remove dirt and debris. If particularly stubborn materials are stuck to the surface, you can use a pressure washer. You can also repair concrete paver surfaces more easily because you can replace individual pavers and re-compact the bedding sand and base beneath. In some cases, the original pavers may be put back into place if they are not damaged.

    Weather Resistant

    • Concrete pavers are an ideal paving material for cold climates because they resist the corrosion that typically occurs when surfaces freeze and thaw. In addition, they do not experience the same wear and tear from deicing salt as poured concrete and other surfaces. When it snows, you can blow or shovel the snow off your concrete paver surface; the pavers' beveled edge prevents the shovel from getting caught along the edge and loosening the surface.
