How to Estimate for a Cement Job

Consider estimating the amount of cement required for a project before making material purchases. Knowing how much cement you need before beginning the job will keep you from buying too much or too little, preventing waste and extra trips to the store. A cement estimate, in cubic feet, depends on the volume of the space to be filled. Calculate the volume from the dimensions of the job space. Estimating cement needs also prevents you from having to hire a contractor to do it for you.

Instructions

Measure the length, width and depth, in inches, of the space to be filled with cement. For example, the space might have a length of 85 inches, a width of 30 inches and a depth of 4 inches.

    • 2

Multiply the length times the width times the height to obtain the volume of the space in cubic inches. Performing this step, for the example, leads to 85 inches times 30 inches times 4 inches, or a volume of 10,200 cubic inches.

    • 3

Divide the volume by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet, since 1,728 cubic inches equals one cubic foot. Now you have, for the example, 10,200 cubic inches divided by 1,728 cubic inches per cubic foot, or cement requirement of 5.9 cubic feet.
