Types of Paving Slabs

Paving slabs, sometimes simply called pavement, have a variety of uses from driveways to walkways to outdoor living space surfaces. Some of these slabs are manufactured to different shapes, sizes, textures and and styles to match any plan or decor. As you can pour these slabs in any area no matter the size or shape, this inexpensive landscaping option can fit into any motif.
  1. Concrete

    • Concrete slabs' ability to go into any area makes them the choice for large surfaces. You can pour them as one large slab or a series of smaller interlocking slabs such as with sidewalks and walkways. Concrete can be tinted and you can include stenciling to match a specific decor. These slabs are also very strong and tolerant to changes in temperature (such as frost) and under heavy loads.

    Stone

    • Stone slabs are manufactured to be a variety of sizes and shapes to fit together in a wide range of patterns. Stone slabs are made of already-found natural stone cut down and shaped into a specific style. Stone slabs can be of limestone, sandstone, bluestone, slate and granite.

    Clay

    • Clay paving slabs are versatile as they can be made into a variety of textures, colors and shapes to suit any need. The natural earthy look of clay slabs often complements gardens or other natural surroundings. Clay slabs are extremely durable and are best suited for high-traffic areas such as walkways, driveways and courtyards.

The interlocking pieces of clay slab bricks adjust better to these subtle shifts of the earth throughout the year such as with frost. In the event that one does become cracked, repair is a simple matter of replacing the damaged slab instead of repaving the entire area to make it even. Clay slabs natural texture is slip resistant making it a great selection for poolsides.

    Acrylic

    • Acrylic slabs are delicate and are only recommended for smaller, low-traffic areas. They are lightweight and can match to any color. You should consider these slabs more as a decorative addition, rather than as slabs capable of handling heavier use.

    Natural Stone

    • Natural stone is cut directly from the earth or the sea into slabs of a pre-specified shape. These slabs do not go through any form of manufacturing and their imperfections often produce a rustic element to the landscaping. Natural stone slabs can be limestone, granite, slate, bluestone and sandstone.
