How to Make Your Own Road Pavers

Paving a private road or driveway with road pavers creates a stylish and long lasting, functional surface. Pouring your own road pavers allows you to completely customize your surface, and it's simple to do. With basic materials and a few days to allow them to dry, you can make pavers that are just as strong and attractive as those sold commercially.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a mold for the road pavers or purchase interlocking molds. Road pavers are exposed to heavier weight loads and traffic than other types, so they should be at least three inches thick. If you want to make the molds yourself, re-purpose aluminum baking tins or build them out of wood. Position four 2x4 inch boards in the shape of a rectangular frame and nail them together.

    • 2

Create a flat, level space for the molds to sit on. If the surface is sloped, your road pavers will harden into a sloped shape. Use a bubble level to check the floor or table you plan to use and adjust it as necessary.

    • 3

Rub the inside of the mold with a mold release agent using a cloth so the concrete doesn't stick. Wipe off any excess to prevent pits in the surface of the pavers.

    • 4

Mix concrete in a wheelbarrow with concrete mix and enough water to make it thick, but pourable.

    • 5

Scoop the wet concrete into the mold with a scooper, shifting it around to get it into the corners. Once the mold is filled, tap it against the flat surface to tamp the concrete and force air pockets out. Smooth off the top of the mold with the edge of a trowel.

    • 6

Cover the wet pavers with moist, breathable material like canvas. Keep the material moist to slow-dry the pavers, and wait at least two days for them to dry.

    • 7

Turn the molds over and tap the bottom so the paver slides out.
