How to Make Asphalt Paving

Asphalt paving is an attractive alternative to gravel or cement. Asphalt is fairly durable and easy to repair. Cracks which develop over time are filled in with more asphalt, and sealant can be applied every few years to help protect the color of the asphalt and fill in small cracks. While parts of the paving installation can be done by anyone, the application of the hot asphalt requires special heavy machinery and done incorrectly will cause your paving to be less stable over time, so the last step is best left to professionals.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a base about 6 to 10 inches deep. The thicker the base the heavier the vehicles that can be driven over it. The soil should be made as compact as possible and cleared of debris.

    • 2

Spread crushed gravel and larger aggregate (a mixture of sand and rocks) to fill the base. Use the coarser aggregate if your base has poor drainage. Use your shovel to spread the gravel evenly.

    • 3

Pour hot asphalt over the gravel and aggregate. Use an asphalt spreader to spread the hot mixture. Use a paver to mix in a layer of gravel and smooth out the pavement. You will need to rent the equipment or hire a paving company to do this step for you.

    • 4

Avoid driving on the asphalt until it has cooled.

    • 5

Use an asphalt sealer if desired to keep the asphalt shiny and protect from small cracks.
