How to Install Paver Edge Restraints

Ensure your compacted paver foundations go beyond the paver perimeter to a minimum lateral extension of the depth of your gravel base. Typically, extend the gravel base out from the paver edge by 8 inches to create a strong foundation to secure a paver edge restraint successfully.

Install a manufactured rigid paver edge restraint for a paver perimeter consisting of long straight lines, such as on a walkway. Abut the back of the L-shaped restraint to the edge of the paver, ensuring the base of the restraint is on the gravel. Drive the supplied 8-to-10-inch metal pegs through the anchor holes along the length of the rigid restraint, using a hammer. Ensure the peg goes into the solid ground beneath the gravel to effectively anchor the restraint.

Install manufactured flexible paver edge restraints where a paver design forms a perimeter curve, such as for a circular patio or winding walkway. Position the length of flexible restraint to abut the pavers and follow the curved perimeter edge. Anchor the metal pegs in sequence through the fastening holes, ensuring each L-shaped configuration is tight to the paver edge.

Use lengths of 6-by-6-inch tanalized wood to install a homemade paver edge restraint for a perimeter consisting of straight lines. Position the wood on a 4-inch gravel base and abut the length to the paver edge. Fasten an 18-inch piece of metal rebar through the wood and into the ground at each end of the length of wood.

Install concrete paver edging, natural stone, bricks or concrete blocks to create a restraining edge for the pavers. Ensure you have a 4-inch gravel base and bed the edge-restraint material into 2 inches of concrete. Keep the material tight to the paver edge to prevent lateral movement of the pavers once the concrete is set.
