How to Lay Landscape Pavers at 90-Degree Turns

Pavers add texture and intricacy to a landscape, and they're simple to work with. Whether you're building a walkway, patio or driveway, the size and shape of your yard will help determine the shape of the pavement. Laying pavers at 90-degree turns can accentuate angles and architecture, or help frame the front yard. Consider the angle when creating your pattern and account for the turn as you plot the width of the site.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a design plan for the paver surface. Draw your yard with the L shape of your walkway or driveway. Sketch a pattern at the 90-degree turn so the pattern along one leg stops and the pavers along the second leg follows the same pattern in a perpendicular direction.

    • 2

Mark out the sides of the site by pinning stakes in each corner and wrapping a string around them. Unearth 8 inches from the site for foot traffic and 12 inches for vehicular traffic using a flat shovel. Tamp the bottom of the excavation with a tamper.

    • 3

Pour 6 to 10 inches of 3/4-inch gravel into the site and rake it evenly over the site. Tamp it until the surface feels stiff.

    • 4

Fit strips of edging along the inside walls and hammer lawn spikes through the edging slots.

    • 5

Spread 1 inch of course bedding sand over top with a straight board.

    • 6

Lay the pavers over the first leg of the pathway in your chosen pattern. Basket-weave and 90-degree herringbone are two designs that work well with an L-shaped surface. Place a flat board over the pavers, and walk on it to make them level.

    • 7

Set the second leg of pavers over the remaining leg. Continue your chosen pattern in the direction of the second leg. For instance, if you're laying the pavers in rows with staggered joints, pavers along the second leg will be perpendicular to the first leg.

    • 8

Sweep stone dust between paver joints with a shop broom.

    • 9

Roll penetrating sealer over the surface with a paintbrush to preserve the color and repel water.
