DIY Pool Paving

Installing pavers around your swimming pool provides a clean patio for you to stretch out and bask in the sun between taking dips in the cool water. Especially designed for use around wet areas, pool pavers increase safety by providing a non-slip surface to walk on. Commonly available in brick, concrete and stone, the pavers are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs, allowing homeowners to create a personal space that blends with the surroundings and enhances the appeal of the pool.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a soil report with a recommendation from a soil engineer about the correct depth for the excavation and base material. Mark the edges of the paver patio with stakes and string so you dig only the part where you want to install pavers.

    • 2

Excavate the area around your pool to a depth of 4 to 18 inches, depending on the recommendation. The recommendation is based on the type and quality of soil and its reaction with water. Check the base of the excavation with a level.

    • 3

Tamp the soil at the base of the excavation using a plate compactor or hand tamper to make it firm and flat. Spread landscape fabric over the base of the trench, overlapping the edges at the seams by 3 to 4 inches. Stake the fabric every 24 inches along the edges to keep it in place.

    • 4

Spread a base material such as gravel, crushed stone or patio paver base over the fabric, covering small sections measuring 5 to 6 inches square at one time. Apply the base material to a depth of 2 inches before compacting it to form a solid base.

    • 5

Spread a 1-inch-thick layer of sand over the base material. Lay the first set of pavers over the area, starting next to the pool and working toward the edge of the sand. Tamp each paver in place with a rubber mallet, and space adjacent pavers 1/8 inches apart. Use a level to make sure the top of every few pavers you install are in line with each other, or adjust by adding or removing sand underneath. Continue laying rows of pavers until you complete all but the last row. Use a masonry saw to cut pavers, if required.

    • 6

Install paver restraints along the base material so the last row of pavers fits snugly between the restraints and pavers. Check that the tops of the restraints are level with the tops of the pavers. Hammer nails into the holes along the restraints every 24 inches. Lay the last row of pavers in place, with their outer edges resting firmly against the restraints.

    • 7

Spread mason's sand over the pavers and sweep it into the tiny gaps in between each brick. Work your way around the pavers to fill all the seams.

    • 8

Apply paver sealer over the pavers according to manufacturer's directions. Let the sealer dry before using the pool.
