Marbles Used in Landscape

Marbles are inexpensive and come in a wide range of colors and sizes. Their smooth surface and round shape calls for careful consideration when deciding where to use them in your landscape. Whether you want to enhance a water feature or embed them in aggregate, marbles bring luminosity and contrast to a landscape. Choose a single color or a mix of neutral white and vibrant colors to add style to your yard.
  1. Fountain

    • Marbles can add depth to a shallow container fountain. Use different sizes and spread them in a thin layer over the bottom of the surface. Mix shades of blue with neutral beige to create a natural look. If the fountain sits on a pedestal or other surface, consider framing it with a thick border of marbles to establish it as a focal point. Use green flexible edging around the outside to contain them.

    Exposed Aggregate

    • Marbles offer a more defined shape than gravel and stand out against aggregate rock. Once wet aggregate is poured over a site, wait two hours for it to begin hardening. To embed the marbles, scatter them over the surface with a shovel or spread them with gloved hands. Lay a board over top and gently press it down to bury more than half the marbles in the thin layer of cement paste on the surface. Once dry, the marbles and other decorative stones create subtle texture and a surprising blend of colors.

    DIY Stepping Stones

    • Pouring your own stepping stones is a do-it-yourself project and a simple way to add personality to a garden. One of the many ways to embellish stones is to embed them with marbles. To do this, lay the marbles at the bottom of the empty mold. Scoop wet concrete gently on top of them, so you don't shift them around too much. Wait two days for it to dry, then remove the stone from the mold. Use a different color for each stone or a mix reflective of the blossoms in your garden.

    Pond Border

    • The hard, glossy surface of marbles accentuates the shimmering surface of a garden pond. Lay the marbles along the outer edge of the pond and embed medium-sized field stones around the outer border to contain , people don't trip. Use colorful purple, pink and orange marbles to add a whimsical quality.
