How to Install a Basalite Block

Basalite is on of the top 10 concrete supply companies in the United States. They specialize in retaining walls and ornamental garden products including paving stones, edging and decorative rocks. These products are all consumer friendly and can be installed by a do-it-yourselfer in a weekend. The advantages of concrete over standard ceramic and brick come in both cost and durability. A cement paver will last as long as a standard brick paver at half the cost.

Instructions

  1. Installing Basalite Pavers

    • 1

Measure and stake the perimeter of the area you are going to pave. Tie leveled string around the stakes to mark off the area.

    • 2

Dig out 5 inches to 6 inches below the finished height of the pavers.

    • 3

Pour in aggregate fill and level it out with a rake.

    • 4

Compact the aggregate with a hand tamper to create a solid base for the pavers.

    • 5

Install the edging pieces around the entire perimeter of the aggregate.

    • 6

Pour in concrete sand to a depth of about 1 inch.

    • 7

Lay two lengths of pipe in the sanded area about 6 feet apart. Pull a 2-inch by 4-inch board over the pipes to level off the sand. Continue moving the pipes and dragging the wood until you have leveled off the entire area. Do not step on the leveled sand.

    • 8

Install the pavers in one of the following patterns: herringbone, running, basket, interlace or random. Work in a straight line and be careful not to step on the leveled sand.

    • 9

Cut any concrete pavers as needed with the paver cutter or wet saw.

    • 10

Secure the pavers in place by running the hand tamper over them.

    • 11

Spread a layer of fine sand over the pavers and sweep away any sand that doesn't fill the gaps between pavers.

    • 12

Run the hand tamper over the pavers one more time.
