Recycled Rubber Landscaping Bricks

One way to achieve a beautiful, diverse landscape is to use a variety of plants, stones and natural-looking materials. Recycled rubber bricks offer an attractive and environmentally friendly alternative to new paving materials. They are designed to resist cracking and weather damage while providing visual contrast to plants and other growth.
  1. Advantages

    • Recycled rubber bricks are equal to bricks in durability and strength, and they offer several more advantages. They are easy to remove, so you can access nearby root systems for trimming. When laid near trees, their flexibility enables tree roots to develop around them without disturbing the surface. They are made in a wide range of colors and specifications to suit almost any landscape style.

    Applications

    • Made from used tires and other rubber products, recycled bricks are designed for every type of outdoor surface, including sidewalks, patios, driveways and play areas. Use soft bricks for play areas and pathways, and hard bricks for surfaces intended for heavy weight loads, such as driveways. They create a slip-resistant surface around pool areas and attractive borders around plants.

    Installation

    • Installing recycled rubber bricks is simple. Whereas clay bricks, stones and tiles require a thick gravel-and-sand base for support and drainage, rubber bricks are laid directly on prepared dirt. Once the site is staked out, the top layer of growth and root systems are removed, and the dirt is stabilized with a compactor. Fit interlocking rubber bricks together over the dirt, and you'll have direct access to the ground beneath when needed.

    Maintenance

    • If the ground below is compacted well, a recycled rubber brick surface is almost maintenance-free. Depending on the surrounding plants and trees, you may need to pull a few end pavers up each year to trim the tree roots beneath. In warm weather, go over the surface once a week with a dust mop to remove grime that otherwise eats away the surface. Use a high-pressure hose and wash the surface regularly to prevent stains and fading.
