How to Get Rid of Scratches on Concrete Walkways

If you have a concrete walkway around your home, you will probably notice some scratches or gouges on the surface. Scratches and cracks can occur from a heavy object being dropped onto the concrete, or can simply develop over time from the effects of weather. It's important to repair the damage before it worsens, because even a small scratch or crack can grow into a large problem if left untreated.

Instructions

  1. Deep Scratches or Cracks

    • 1

Put on a pair of work gloves. You don't want to get mineral spirits or the urethane caulk on your skin.

    • 2

Wear a dust mask or respirator if you are sensitive to fumes from urethane or mineral spirits.

    • 3

Pour some of the mineral spirits onto a clean rag. Wipe out the crack in the concrete with the rag. The mineral spirits will help clean out any grime and debris that can weaken the seal of the urethane caulk. Allow the mineral spirits to dry; it should only take a few minutes for it to evaporate.

    • 4

Load a caulking gun with a tube of urethane caulk. Place the nozzle of the caulking tube in one end of the crack. Squeeze the trigger and fill in the entire length of the scratch or crack.

    • 5

Smooth out any excess caulk with your finger. Wipe away any extra caulk along the sides of the scratch with the rag.

    Shallow Scratches

    • 6

Put on a pair safety glasses, a dust mask, and some knee pads. Wipe any dirt away from the scratched area with a rag.

    • 7

Place a diamond-edged grinding disc on a 4-inch-diameter concrete grinder.

    • 8

Get on your knees and turn on the concrete grinder.

    • 9

Place the edge of the concrete grinder disc directly above the scratch. Push the edge of the grinding disc against the scratch, just as if you were sanding a piece of wood. Lightly trace around the scratch to even out the area.

    • 10

Vacuum up the concrete dust after grinding.
