How to Install Stamped Concrete Finishes

A stamped concrete finish brings texture and style to a dull slab. The process involves pressing textured rubber stamps into wet concrete to give the finished surface a hand-carved look. This is a do-it-yourself project that can be done on a new pavement or over a thin new layer of concrete on an old surface. With a little preparation, you can complete a stamped concrete finish in a day.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the concrete surface you want to stamp. Clean it with a stain remover and scrub brush to remove stains and debris. Hose off cleaning solvents thoroughly and wait for the surface to dry.

    • 2

Wipe mold release agent lightly over the inside of the stamps so they don't stick to the concrete.

    • 3

Roll liquid bonding adhesive over the surface with a paint roller. Apply it with straight, even lines and wait a few minutes for it to dry.

    • 4

Mix concrete mix and water in a wheelbarrow. Use a flat trowel to scoop concrete onto the surface in small piles and spread a one-half-inch layer over the surface. Use a squeegee to spread the concrete over hard-to-reach places. Allow half an hour for the new concrete to begin to set.

    • 5

Position the first stamp over the concrete and adjust the placement so it is aligned with the edge. When you're sure of the placement, press the stamp gently into the surface.

    • 6

Align the second stamp with the first and press it down. Continue pressing the stamps until you run out space. Return to the first stamp and lift it straight out of the concrete. Reapply mold release agent and re-use the stamp in the next section.

    • 7

Lay moist canvas or another type of breathable fabric over the stamped surface. Spray the material with water regularly for about a week. This process prevents the concrete from drying out too fast and becoming brittle.

    • 8

Roll concrete sealer over the surface to guard it from chipping and water damage.
