Ideas for How to Pave Your Driveway

A paved driveway can make any home and yard look neat, clean, and inviting. If you want to pave your driveway there are many options. The most common paving materials for driveways are asphalt, concrete, gravel and brick. Each of these materials has its own pros and cons concerning aesthetic appeal, price and durability. Before you make any decisions, you should consider all these factors.
  1. Asphalt

    • Asphalt has a smooth, neat look, and doesn't show stains as readily as most other paving materials. It is also cheaper than most material except gravel. Asphalt is flexible, so in cold weather it can contract without cracking and in extreme heat it can expand without cracking or warping. While you can do many other types of paving yourself, asphalt requires high temperature materials and specialized equipment that is best left to professionals.

    Concrete

    • Concrete has a smooth finish that appeals to many homeowners and it can last for many years. It costs a bit more than asphalt but much less than brick.

    Gravel

    • Gravel is one of the cheapest driveway solutions and provides a rugged, natural look. Water also runs through gravel, which can alleviate erosion problems. Gravel is relatively inexpensive, but the savings may be lost if it has to be reapplied often.

    Brick

    • Owing to both the material and the amount of labor involved, bricks are one of the most expensive driveway paving materials. Brick driveways are rare and will give your home and yard a distinct and classic look.
