Do It Yourself -- Circle Paved Patio

A patio is a clean place to place a few chairs and maybe a fire pit to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Although patios come in all shapes and sizes, a simple circular patio paved with rock pavers is an easy job for the average homeowner to do within a few hours. Purchase pavers designed for circular applications to save yourself a lot of cuts. Install the patio correctly and it should last for decades of enjoyment.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out the area where you want to create a patio, adding 6 inches to the area to be paved. Pound a stake into the center. Attach a string to the stake and tie the other end around a spray paint can. Spray the circumference of the area, holding the can out from the center stake and walking around in a circle.

    • 2

Remove the grass and soil, 6 inches down, keeping a 1/8-inch slope per foot away from any buildings, using a square edged shovel. Tamp the soil well with a pole tamper or a motorized tamper.

    • 3

Add 4 inches of gravel, leveling it over the floor of the excavated area. Tamp it down with the tamper.

    • 4

Lay landscape fabric down over the gravel to hold the sand in place and to prevent heavy rain from washing out the base. Overlap all the edges so you can trim them later once you have the pavers in place.

    • 5

Pour 1 inch of sand over the landscape fabric. Check the depth in several areas to make sure you level it evenly. Scrape a section of 2-by-4 over the sand to create a smooth surface.

    • 6

Set the first brick in the center of the circle. Use a tape measure to make sure it is the same distance from all sides. Lay the rest of the pavers until you reach the outside edge of the patio. The base stone should extend out about 6 inches out from the pavers.

    • 7

Trim the landscape fabric with scissors so that it is level with the ground surface. Pound in the edge restraints every 8 inches around the perimeter of the pavers to hold them in place.

    • 8

Pour sand over the surface of the patio and use a broom to push and pull the sand into the crevices between the pavers. Remove the excess.
