Outline the driveway with parallel ropes spaced 10 to 12 feet apart if the driveway is straight and 14 feet apart where it curves. Check the width, using measuring tape, and adjust the ropes as needed.
Remove the top 12 inches of dirt, growth, sand and other materials from the site, using a shovel. Dump patches of grass in a wheelbarrow and replant them in any bare areas of the yard. Throw the dirt on a tarp several feet from the site, and plan to use it to fill low spots in the rest of your yard.
Pour two 3-inch layers of gravel on the site, and compact it down with a roller machine or hand tamper.
Coat the driveway with a thick layer of hot RC-250, an asphalt-based oil, using a sprayer.
Cover the hot oil with a 3-inch layer of gravel. Shovel the gravel on if the driveway is short, or use a spreader truck to apply an even layer before the oil begins to cool.
Go over the gravel with a roller to press it into the oil and stabilize the surface. Wait a few hours for the oil to cool.
Spray a second coating of hot RC-250 over the surface, and spread another 3-inch layer of rocks on top. Go over the second layer with the roller.
Top off the driveway with a 2-inch layer of loose gravel and rake it level. Add another 1-inch layer in the center to crown the surface for drainage.
